Apple hires Stanford digital health director

Apple has brought on Sumbul Desai, MD, for an undefined senior role which CNBC said “demonstrates that Apple is taking its health ambitions seriously.”

Desai has been serving as the executive director of Stanford Medicine’s digital health center, devising the strategy for the university’s virtual primary care clinic, ClickWell Care. The center had already been working with Apple, soliciting proposals for research projects focused on new healthcare applications for the Apple Watch. The device was recently shown to have the lowest error rate among consumer-level wearables in measuring energy expenditure and heart rate.

CNBC reported it was unclear what projects Desai will be leading at Apple, like the existing software packages HealthKit and CareKit, or a brand new endeavor.
