HHS Secretary wants physicians’ ideas for new payment models

HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, is encouraging physicians to submit more suggestions on new Medicare payment models to move away from fee-for-service payments.

According to Bloomberg, Price spoke about at the first voting meeting of the Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee, set up in 2015 to consider alternative payment models. Physicians’ ideas could not only serve the goals of improving quality and reducing costs, he said, but could help combat feelings of burnout among doctors.

He blames “one-size-fits-all” Medicare for some of that burden. New ideas could especially help physicians in rural or underserved areas, he said, who consider the current transition to value-based care driven by larger, integrated systems with greater resources.
