5 hospitals sign agreement to create second-largest health system in Mass

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Lahey Health, New England Baptist Hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital and Anna Jacques Hospital have signed a definitive agreement to merge into a 13-hospital system.

The Boston Business Journal reported the deal would create the second-largest system in Massachusetts after Partners Healthcare. The hospitals would retain their current names and keep separate boards while operating under a new parent organization, with Beth Israel CEO Kevin Tabb, MD, at its head.

“The new system will strengthen our ability to make the investments in our facilities, technology and people that will help ensure our continued success,” Tabb said. “Together, we will improve patient care, help contain rising health care costs, and better position our member hospitals in a rapidly changing health care environment.”
