Top 10 healthiest states in America

Vermont is ranked as the nation’s healthiest state, according to UnitedHealth Group, which released its annual population health rankings. Mississippi trails the country as the least healthy state in the nation.

The rankings are composed of more than 30 metrics to provide an annual snapshot of population health of a given state relative to other states. The report, America’s Health Rankings Annual Report, was first published in 1990 and draws from 19 publicly available data sources. It was developed this year with the American Public Health Association.

Here are the top 10 healthiest states in the U.S.:

  1. Vermont
  2. Massachusetts
  3. Hawaii
  4. Connecticut
  5. Utah
  6. New Hampshire
  7. Minnesota
  8. New Jersey
  9. Washington
  10. Colorado

Here are the nation’s 10 least healthy states:

  1. Indiana
  2. South Carolina
  3. Kentucky
  4. Tennessee
  5. West Virginia
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Alabama
  8. Arkansas
  9. Louisiana
  10. Mississippi
