Infographic: Medical malpractice by the numbers

It's an unfortunate and unescapable fact: medical malpractice happens. And when it does, it affects not only the patients and doctors involved, but also the healthcare community as a whole.

Researchers like David Studdert, LLB, ScD, and his co-authors of a study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, believe figuring out which doctors are more likely to have paid claims against them will go a long way toward reducing the overall number of instances of malpractice.

"The distribution of malpractice claims among physicians is not well understood," wrote Studdert et al. "If claim-prone physicians account for a substantial share of all claims, the ability to reliably identify them at an early stage could guide efforts to improve care."
