Social media carried a lot of fake health news about cancer in 2019

Misinformation about cancer was the most viral type of sensationalized fake health news across social media platforms in 2019, according to an NBC News report.

Social media platforms are finally taking action against misinformation related to health after pressure from lawmakers, doctors and other health advocates, according to the report, which compiled a list of the most viral health misinformation and analyzed engagement.

The most comments, shares and reactions specifically came from Facebook, with cancer being the most popular topic for misinformation. The fake health news included unproven cures and vaccines related to cancer in 2019. The biggest fake news story of the year was one that suggested big pharmaceutical companies are hiding the cure to cancer. Marijuana was also a popular alleged cure.
